July Empties - Travel Edition

Rome - July 2012

• Ambre Solaire Factor 50 'On the go' - Literally a skin saviour!  I'm not sure what The Boy and I would have done without this SPF in Rome. It was scorchio! Perfect for a few days away and a bargain for £3.  I also have to point out, that I barely got any prickly heat rash using this. Now that really is amazing... Will certainly repurchase.
• Boss Orange - Nice perfume that is not usually on my radar.  Not sure I'll repurchase again, as it is not necessarily one of my faves - but I enjoyed using it.
• Elie Saab Scented body cream and shower gel - Enjoyed using the accompanying bath/body products from Elie Saab and I'm still enjoying the perfume.  As you know, I'd never usually purchase these kind of products, but I will continue to use them if I acquire them in gift sets.  
• Pantene Pro-V 'Smooth & Sleek' shampoo/conditioner - Found these in a travel bag. Does what it says on the tin. Nothing outstanding, but would consider repurchasing the travel sizes in future.
• Neutrogena Deep Clean face wipes - I know lots of people rave on these, but I'm undecided.  Did a fairly decent job at removing make up in a pinch, purely because I forgot my cleanser!  Can't say I'd be in a massive rush to repurchase though. 
• L'Occitane Apricot Flower Shea Butter - I really like this multi purpose balm/butter.  I've used it just about everywhere. Brilliant stuff and smells divine. Will repurchase but have two other scents to use up first.

Paris - August 2012

• Johnson's Dreamy Skin face wipes - These were nicely scented but very dry and therefore were quite difficult to use. Won't repurchase.
• Chanel Chance Eau Tendre  - A sample I got from Sephora in LV.  Its a floral scent, so not usually my bag.  Nice to carry about in my handbag for a quick spritz on the go.  Won't repurchase, although my massive perfume collection is sadly lacking Chanel.  I can't seem to find a fragrance that I really love from them. Oh well, the search continues...
• Kings & Queens Lemonflower shower gel - Got this from a mini Kings & Queens sent in TK Maxx for £3! Bargain.  Took this one to Paris with me and enjoyed the scent. Surprising as I'm not really a citrus girl. Won't repurchase this particular scent, but will probably give the brand another whirl.
• Sure Crystal Clear deodorant - Does what it says on the tin. Only got roll on as I couldn't find a small aerosol  Might repurchase if travelling. 
• Bare Minerals powder foundation - I like this for travel as it doesn't have to go in those stupid little plastic bags! Have a few various mini BE foundations to use up before a repurchase is due. 
• Benefit Posie Tint - Another mini sized product. Think this one came from Glamour.  Recently finished the full size.  Will probably repurchase in the future. 
• Bath & Body Works Pocketbac 'All I want is Love' - Gorgeous scent! Love. Hope to always have these little pocketbac's in my life...
• Lancome Hypnose Drama - Sample size that came with Tresor Midnight Rose perfume. Wasn't a massive fan of this.  Didn't notice any additional 'drama' and it transferred on me. Wouldn't buy this. Much prefer Benefit They're Real.
• Maybelline Dream Matte Mouse foundation - This has seemed to last FOREVER, plus I can't be sure if I liked it or not.  Still, it's gone now... 
• Oilatum Natural Repair face cream - Useful for dry flaky skin. Will probably repurchase as the weather changes.

Home 2012

• Illamaqua 'Freak' EDP sample - Love this. Own the full size. One sexy scent and a good one to try if you love Tom Ford 'Black Orchid' but cannot get your mitts on it/looking for a slightly cheaper option.
• Lipstick Queen '5 minutes' lip gloss - really enjoyed using this. It was a nice peachy/natural lip colour. You know the score with lip glosses... No buying at the moment.
• Giorgio Armani 'Acqua di Gioia' sample -both samples were from Sephora LV.  Bit too fresh/citrus for me personally, but it was a nice summery scent.
• Calvin Klein 'Forbidden Euphoria' sample - I love the original, but I am not so fussed with this. The addition of fruit kind of ruins the scent for me.  On the other hand, if you didn't really like the original, I'd say give this one a try.  Won't repurchase. 
• MAC Zoomlash  - Not for me. Very wet formula that I just could not get to grips with.  Shame really, I have a full size to use at some point. 
• Clinique High Impact mascara/Full Potential lip gloss duo - Quite enjoyed the mascara, but loved the lip gloss. A lovely plummy shade. Sad to see the back of this.  Might consider repurchasing the gloss, but probably not the mascara.
• OPI Nail Envy - Tiny bit left in the bottom that's gone all gloopy.  I do like this, but would consider suggestions for other nail strengtheners in the future.
• Seche Vite - Love how quick my nails dry, but not so much with the shrinkage and the gloopy consistency in the bottle.  Still enjoying my INM 'Out the door' topcoat, so will not repurchase at the moment.

December Empties

I don't know about you, but December went super fast for me.  Coming back from Las Vegas to a manic time at work and then Christmas - it's been non-stop!

I haven't really got through masses of product  this month, but there is some make up. Oh yes there is. Here are the products that I finished off in December.

• L'Occitane Shea Butter hand cream - best EVER hand cream. Love it.  Have multiple back ups.
• Maybelline Falsies mascara - thought this was okay, but wasn't necessarily wowed. Won't repurchase for the time being,  as I have a tonne of mascara to get through in 2012.  More of that to follow...
• Elemis Cellular Recovery capsules - I really like these high potency skin capsules.  The premise is that you use  the pink oil filled capsules for the day time (rose) and green for the evening (lavender)  The only thing I would say is that I didn't really use the rose capsules in the day. I have combination skin and so I didn't really trust my skin to behave.  That being said, I could have been worrying about nothing - which is generally the case!  I think these are lovely for a treat for tired, stressed out skin, but I don't think I'd keep using them as part of my regular routine.  
• Alpha H Liquid Gold - now this product has become a firm favourite in my routine.  Since Mrs Hirons suggested Liquid Gold to me, there isn't a week that passes where I don't use it.  Love it and have back ups. Thank you Mrs H!
• MAC Fix + - daily use product. Must buy more.
• TRESemme Instant Refresh dry shampoo - Didn't really rate this. Made my hair feel a bit crispy and sticky, if that is possible?  Will resume use of Batiste and keep searching for the prefect dry shampoo.
• bareEscentuals Buxom Gloss in Zena - well this is indeed a sad day.  I love these glosses, no surprise there.  But this particular shade was perfection and so not a typical 'me' shade.  Think it was a custom colour for QVC UK.  I even looked for it in Sephora while on my hols, no sign of it.  I literally scraped every last drop out.  Ah well, there are other Buxom glosses in my stash, but I will always have fond memories of Zena.

Collateral Damage

I went to a family party last night to celebrate my cousin's 21st birthday.  My first thought was to use makeup that I haven't tried before. So I picked up MAC Mineralize Eye colour in 'Earthy Riches' which I got in the Tartan Tale box set last month.  I thought that I could create a good smoky eye with this and was excited to give it a try.

Apologies for crappy iPhone pic but I cannot find my memory card reader!! Damn those bloody house elves. If they are going to steal things,  you'd think they could come and give the place a little tidy as well...

As you can see the whole 'domed' section from the product had cracked and fallen off.  Taking most of the beautiful purple shade with it.  You can see from the after pic, there is still plenty of the metallic taupe shade left, but I can't help feeling a bit miffed about it all.

I don't recall dropping or banging the shadow. So I'm not exactly sure what happened to it.  As this is my first MAC Mineralized Eye Shadow, is this something that is likely to happen again?  I have a split Mineralize Blush (Hang Loose) and that has always been fine, so I just wonder if this a known problem with the eyeshadow or have I been unlucky?

Has this happened to you? Have you opened new products to find they are broken? It's gutting isn't it?!?

Pink to make the Boys Wink: From one extreme to the other!

I bought both of these lipsticks at the beginning of the month, whilst out with Sarah (@Sarahln).  And neither of which I have worn yet!  Isn't that awful? 

First up I got Bobbi Brown Rich Lip Colour in Mod Pink (£16) described on the Bobbi Brown website as "A bright pink".  I guess this is something that I am going to wear on a daily basis, to add a bit of colour to my face.  That is, when I remember that I have it! I love it. It's such a beautiful colour.  I did have other pictures of this lipstick, but they keep uploading to the blog at funny angles. So I gave up after the fifth attempt.

And I also succumbed to MAC Impassioned (£13.50), which is an amplified lipstick that is described as "amped up fuchsia".  I initially wanted a bright Spring/Summer lipstick - and boy did I get that!  But having got this one home, I've been a little cautious about what to pair it with.  Hence the reason why I haven't worn it yet.

  Needless to say, the lovely MUA Kenneth Soh was on hand and gave me some fab advice (and a bit of confidence) on how to actually wear it.  His suggestion was to pat it onto lips with my finger and add a touch of gloss to finish the lip look. Keep brows defined and pair with just a simple slick of mascara.  Keeping the look very fresh and all about the pout.  So as I am off out tomorrow night to see Peter Kay, that is the look I am going to try out.  The Boy will be surprised! 

Please tell me that other people buy things, get them home and then are too scared to use them? I really hope I'm not on my own here...

I Love My Little Bro! Part Two

So last Saturday, my little bro and his girlfriend arrived back to good old Blighty, after an amazing time in the Big Apple.  That reminds me, I so need to start looking at organising our trip Stateside.  Anyway, little bro was a superstar and managed to get me 2 of the 3 travel exclusive 'Look in a Box' kits from MAC at Heathrow.

So in my possession I now have 'Girl Next Door' and 'Rocker Chick'.  I'll apologise in advance that some of these pictures wash the colours out. Sorry! Damn you flash!!

I'm delighted with these sets and I really cannot get over the value for money. I wholeheartedly suggest you grab them while you can.  I was actually only going to get one set, but little bro encouraged me to get both.  I'm glad he did now!

 I haven't had chance to use any of my new goodies. I've just been too tired this week and work has been just a tiny bit mental.  I'll report back with any firm favourites.  But I can already tell, I'm going to love everything!

Once upon a time, in a CCO...

The Boy took me to Cheshire Oaks outlet village today.  I knew exactly which shop I was headed for - straight for the CCO or Cosmetic Company Outlet.   These shops sell discounted cosmetics from brands that are part of the Estee Lauder group, such as MAC, Origins, Bobbi Brown, Clinique, Perscriptives and of course, Estee Lauder.

The picture above was just the MAC section of the store. They had a range of eye shadows, pigments etc., but they also had stock from previous MAC collections.  Today in store, I saw items from the following collections: Hello Kitty, Dame Edna, To the Beach, Venomous Villains and Tartan Tale.

And you can see which collection piqued my attention!

The Tartan Tale collection was released by MAC for Christmas 2010, but at that time of year, I was more concerned with buying gifts, than buying items for myself.  There were plenty of goodies that I wanted from that collection, so I was glad to find them at the CCO at such a reduced price.

The Swinging Violets Mineralize kit (£27.75) comprises of Bare Study paint pot, Zoom Lash mascara, Icescape lipglass and Earthly Riches mineralize eye shadow.

How gorgeous is this eye shadow?  It's half plum and half a gunmetal grey that in some lights leads towards taupe. It is so pretty!  When looking at the 3 Mineralize kits on offer, The Boy honed in on this one and said "this is very YOU" and he was right! That was the one I was drawn to.

The Warm Thrillseekers pigment/glitter set (£19.25). was next on my agenda.  They are a range of lovely wearable pigments, but the unfortunately, the flash sort of washes them out on the photo below.  The only one I will probably not use on a regular basis would be the Reflects Bronze glitter. I have to say, I look at the full size pigments and wonder if I will ever get through a whole jar! These sets are perfect for sampling different colours and I can actually see myself finishing one of these little vials.

I Love My Little Bro!

My baby bro and his girlfriend are flying over the Atlantic as I type, headed for the Big Apple.  I had such an amazing time there last year celebrating my 30th birthday and so I'm incredibly jealous.

But my darling baby bro has appeased my jealousy and managed to snap up 2 of the MAC "look in a box" sets for me whilst mooching through Heathrow.  I couldn't be more excited about this news!  I have "Girl Next Door" and "Rocker Chic", well, when they return from their hols in NYC that is. I'll post more on these kits when I have them in my possession. *squeal*

I really hope that they both have an amazing time over there in NYC. I know I did!

Small Holiday Haul

I'm on holiday this week (whoop whoop) and the weekend heralded the start of a fabulous time with family and friends.  Saturday was my good, crazy friend Sarah (@sarahln) birthday celebrations which took us to LEAF for Afternoon Tea.  How civilised and British?!  Sorry to tell you though, I had coffee. Which further makes me think I was born in the wrong country!! The Boy ate his body weight in cake. I kid you not!  The Birthday Queen had a fabulous time, so that was the main thing. 

Sunday gave me a rare opportunity to meet with Nic (@NicOCD) for mooching, Starbucks, lunch and cocktails.  Nic's 3 little angels keep her super busy, so I snatched the chance to catch up over a cocktail....or 3! We headed to MAC where I picked up a Cremeblend blush in 'So Sweet, So Easy' and a 130 brush that I've been lusting after.

So then we popped into The Body Shop, because I had seen the new Earth Lovers shower gel collections were on special offer.  I think it was buy one, get half off.  So I got 'Apricot & Basil' and 'Watermelon & Eucalyptus' scents.  I really wanted the 'Pear & Lemongrass' one too, but I was restrained.  I'll get that one next!  These little beauties are sulphate, colour,  paraben and soap free. They also smell divine, so I cannot wait to give them a whirl. 

The Body Shop also were giving away the Vitamin C Microdemabrasion or a Vitamin E face mask (I think!) if you spent £15 on skincare. I really wanted to try the microdermabrasion, so it seemed the perfect opportunity.  I decided to try the Nutriganics cleansing gel when the SA showed us the consistency.  It was just like the Elemis Melting Cleansing Gel, transitioning from gel to oil on the skin.  I really like the Elemis product, so I thought I'd see how they compared.  I also got a Tea Tree mask to try out before I qualified for my freebie. Yay!!

Ooops! Forgot about this last product!  I'm obsessed with lip stains, must be something to do with my whole 'lazy girl' philosophy on beauty. Anyway,  so I wanted to try this and it's ok but I'm not wowed.  It has quite a silky texture, which I like. But it is really nothing special.  And considering it was a tenner, I think there are better and cheaper lip stains out there (Max Factor).  Sorry, did I mention that it was a lip and cheek stain? Haven't tried it on cheeks yet, so I will reserve total judgement.  But it's not looking good at the moment....

Flash forward to yesterday.  The Boy took the day off and suggested that we went to the Trafford Centre for a spot of lunch and mooching.  Well the only thing I got while I was there was medicated lip balm!! Is that sad?  My lips have been really sore and Nic suggested Blistex 'Relief Cream'.  As Superdrug had a 3 for 2, it would have been rude not to.  

Have to say I'm OBSESSED with the Blistex 'Lip Massage'.  Those little rubbery ridges are just perfect for gently buffing away dry and flaky skin.  I have been using the 'Relief Cream' for an intensive moisturising hit and then applying the balm from the lip massage tube and buffing away over the lips. Ingenious and much nicer to use than that messy lip scrub from Lush.

So nothing much to speak of from the Trafford Centre, but the main thing was that I had a really nice day spending quality time with The Boy.

MAC Viva Glam - Cyndi

Do you go gaga for Gaga? Or are you crazy for Cyndi?  Maybe it'y my age, or maybe I just can't pull off the light blue toned pink.  Anyway, my loyalties lie firmly with Cyndi.  After all, I am a child of the 80's!

In 1994, MAC launched the M.A.C Aids fund and the Viva Glam Program.  Limited Edition lip colours  were introduced on MAC counter's for a maximum of 12 months, with all RRP from the sale of each lipstick/lip glass going towards helping men, women and children who are dealing with AIDS/HIV around the world.

Viva Glam Cyndi was launched in Spring 2010, alongside Viva Glam Gaga.  They retail for £13.50 in the UK, which is a total bargain when you know where the money is headed for.  To be honest, they have never really been on my radar until recently, when I have begun wearing lipstick more frequently.  I'm usually attracted to gloss.  I like how it looks and feels on the lips.  But, after swatching Viva Glam Cyndi on a recent trip to MAC, I was surprised at the the glossy finish.  I guess that's because it's a lustre.  

So here it is.  Up close and personal in the bullet and on my lips. Apologies for the slightly blurry picture!

At first the colour was a little frightening to me.  I don't usually go for bold colours on the lips.  But I quickly realised that this would be a really wearable shade for me.  It's bright, without being too much.  It's a red, but is somewhat toned down with the inclusion of coral, making this a sort of 'my lips but better' shade, well, for me anyway.  I've been wearing it most days to work and have found it really to be a really easy shade to pull off.  It's certainly low maintenance (which you know is a must for me!) and polished.  Perfect!

I guess as it is almost Spring 2011, that the reign of Viva Glam Cyndi and Gaga will be drawing to a close.  So I know that I am going to have to bag a few of these as back-up's.  I not only love the product.  But fully support MAC and their fund-raising effort for such a worthwhile cause.  I'll certainly be adding a few more Viva Glam's to my collection.  Namely, II, IV and VI!  I don't feel bad though.  I'm just doing my bit for a great charity.

Mac Lust

Has anyone seen the new MAC collections due for release in the UK in early January 2011??  Ladies,  I've got some serious lust going on!!

Lets face it, it's freezing cold and snowy out there. So I've been safely tucked up at home watching Temptalia's You Tube videos and I have to say I'm quite taken with a number of items from the MAC Stylishly Yours and Champ-Pale collections.

Although I would find it quite difficult to work with the vibrant pinks and purples of the Stylishly Yours collection, I'm instantly drawn to it.  It's certainly not a collection for the Neutral Nellie's amongst us, although the Cream Colour Bases appear to be quite wearable (for me and my pale skin anyway!).  I particularly like Tickle Me Pink and Virgin Isles.

Champ-Pale is certainly less threatening. If you liked the Urban Decay Naked Palette, you'll  certainly love this.  Muted, classy and understated, there is not a single thing from this collection that I wouldn't want.  I'm not going to lie, I want all the Lip Gelee's (Bubble Lounge, Luxure, Sin-tilation and Straight to the Head) and pretty much all (I'd say 3 out of 4) of the Paint Pots! Greedy? Moi?  My favourite lust is the Rose Ole Special Reserve highlighting powder, it looks so beautiful.  But then again, I bet the Chez Chez Lame is pretty amazing too.

Musings on MUA at Superdrug

Perhaps I'm a little late to the party on this one, but I saw these MUA eye shadows in Superdrug about 3 weeks ago.  I'd heard quite a few bloggers talking about their products so I thought I would give them a moment of my time.  As it turns out, the MUA display at Superdrug was totalled! A big old mess with make up everywhere.  This is usually the point where I about turn and stroll off into the sunset, when something caught my eye.  The imaginatively named Shade 12, winked its duochromed eye at me and I had to go back.  And while I was there,  pondering over the quality of a make up item that cost a quid, I managed to throw 3 others into the basket. The packaging is a bit utilitarian, but hey, what do you want for a pound!?! 

So here are the colours I picked, that cost me the non too purse busting price of £4!!  From the bottom of the  picture upwards there is Shade 12 (pearl), Shade 13 (pearl), Shade 14 (pearl) and Shade 19 (matte)

Shade 12 is a total dupe for MAC Club eye shadow, which is a shade that I have been debating on purchasing for aeon's!  The MAC website describes Club as "Muted redish brown duochrome with green opalescent shimmer". It is meant to give the effect of wearing 2 or more eye shadows as the colour changes when blended out.  Also, the duochrome finish of the shadow emphasises different shades in different light.

 After seeing so many beautiful looks using Club, I often stop at MAC to admire it.  But then the SA tells me "not everyone can wear Club.  It looks fantastic on some and looks dreadful on others".  And this is not just from one SA.  I've heard this on a number of occasion's from different people. 

 I suppose I'm just not prepared to spend the money on something I may never use.  Ok, so I know that we all do that.  Buy things, hate them and never use them again.  But we at least purchase the product thinking (if not hoping) that it will work out for us.  I guess that I already have it it my head that it wont work for me, so I've always put it back on the shelf.  

Anyway, Shade 12 was worth a punt.  For a quid, I could afford to hate it! So here is is. From my initial swatch it seems quite pigmented and certainly does have the "look" of Club, so we shall see.  I haven't used it yet. Then again, I haven't been anywhere, except to work!  I think I will give this a spin the next time I go out. Who knows when that will be!! 

Shade 13 is a dark aubergine shade, shot through with a purple shimmer.  Yet again, it has a substantial amount of colour pay-off when swatched.  Looking forward to creating a purple smoky eye with this shade.

Shade 14 looks totally boring and disappointing in this picture. I can assure you, its better in real life.  Its a blackened green that looks amazing on skin.  It reminds me a little of spilled petrol or oil.  Now I know that is not the most glamorous of comparisons, but like Shade 12, there is a slight duochrome to this colour.   Another perfect shade for a sexy evening smoky eye.

Shade 19 was by far the biggest disappointment to me. I mean, how interesting can a matte brown be?  However, this was a "pre-Naked palette" purchase and I really didn't have any matte brown shades in my collection.  I didn't swatch this one in store, I just went on faith and the fact that I had been so impressed with the other shades.  When I swatched this colour at home, it was really difficult to get any decent colour pay-off.  I seems to coat my finger really well.  Fooling me into thinking it was creamy and densely pigmented, but that just did not transfer to skin at all.  I cant imagine that it will be very easy to get a decent amount of colour onto the eye lid.  I think I'll stick to the pearl formulations next time and Shade 19 will probably head straight for the bin!

Now, for a word of warning.  This is not a horrendous bruise on my arm.  This is a photo of the mess created trying to remove the MUA shades with a face wipe.  I didn't have them on my arm for very long but it took quite a while and a lot of scrubbing to finally get it all off.  This is my one concern with using these MUA shadows and as I mentioned before I haven't really used them yet, apart from swatching.  I really hope using a decent cleanser will make it a little easier to part company with the day/evenings eye shades, but I will have to let you know once I have actually tried it.

MAC Venomous Villains

Everyone loves a bad guy, don't they? And Disney? I am such a sucker for Disney. So imagine my excitement at seeing the full collection of MAC Venomous Villains on Temptalia.com You Tube channel.  She was one of 3 beauty bloggers to get the scoop at the recent press event. So I suggest you pop over and take a look at the collection in full here.  I think it is expected to launch in September. Although I don't know if it will be a simultaneous launch in the States and the UK. Fingers crossed! There is also a really interesting behind the scenes video from the event. Now me stating my pant-wetting excitement may seem a bit controversial, as many Bloggers and You Tubers are not feeling the MAC/Disney love. They don't like the packaging (I do!) or the theme (I do!) and as always, these things are a matter of choice and personal preference. I love the shades and colour families, but maybe this has something to do with the fact that I'm an Autumn/Winter kind of girl. Its certainly not due to the fact that I am subduing evil tenancies, no sireee!


So I'm writing a shopping list. Well, its more of a Lust List, of things that I would love to get my hands on. Then if any unsuspecting purchaser (such as The Boy, for example) should stop by and see this, then he (whoops, did I say he??) would know exactly what I would like to have in my collection. Clever, no? See, I'm getting into this villainous mind frame already and we are only in August!! (cue maniacal villainous laughter) Muhahahahahahahahahaha!

Cruella De-Vil

Disclaimer - I am under no illusions that I will get my paws on all of the above. In fact,  I have a feeling that I will see the product in person and probably decide against purchasing them in the end. As that is what usually happens. I talk myself out of these things (and regret them for months to come). This is merely a "if money was no object" Lust list, unfortunately for me, money is an object!!  However, the nail varnish, Resort Life lipgelee  and mineralize eyeshadows are a given and they will be mine... (cue maniacal villainous laughter again) Muhahahahahahahahahaha! 

My Coral Crush

 

Whilst having a look for Stereo Rose this morning, I noticed that I had quite a few coral coloured blushers in my collection.  Not having the time to think about it for much more than as passing second, I slapped a bit on, threw it all back in the drawer and headed for my train.

I love coral.  And there is something about a coral toned blush that add's a certain warmth to my pale skin - no bronzer required!. My skin tone is enhanced with a bloom of coral .  I find that I look as though I have a really healthy glow from within (all fake I assure you!). 

 I've included 2 pictures.  First one is in direct sunlight, so you can get a feel for the level of shimmer in each item.  The second is in normal light.

 I still think my favourite is Stereo Rose MSF.  I love the colour pay-off and subtle shimmer that it provides.  I have to say that I really like all of these products.  The one I use least is the Bare Escentuals Tropical Radiance, but maybe that's because I had forgotten I owned it! It also is the most orangey coral in my collection, so perhaps I subconsciously choose the pinker shades.

 I'm not limited to blusher in my love affair with coral.  I love coral nail varnish, lipstick and lip gloss too.
